The Norwegian American Presents: The Democracy Center

Welcome to the Democracy Center!

Norway House's newspaper, The Norwegian American, created a new gallery exhibit in the Joan and Walter Mondale Galleri.

The exhibit's inspiration stems from our Editor-in-Chief, Lori Ann Reinhall’s impressions from a recent visit to Norway’s Constitution Museum at Eidsvoll. Together, adults and children learn about the history of the 1814 Norwegian Constitution, which was largely inspired by the U.S. Constitution.

Thanks to the support of donors and the Ventura Village Neighborhood Association, the exhibit features a children’s activity corner at Norway House to create a similar experience for visitors of all ages.

The exhibit is presented to the public free of charge.

Remarkable Expressions: Works by Hope Academy Middle School Art Students

Sara Howard’s middle school art students from Ventura Village’s own Hope Academy have been working hard all year to create a showcase of their remarkable work. These students have been learning new skills and expanding their creativity throughout the year, exploring the following questions with each class time:

What exactly is art?

Why do we create?

What is the purpose of art?

Sara and her students hope that you can join them to celebrate these students’ hard work and creativity this year, and please encourage others to visit the showcase throughout the weekend.

Perceptions of Norway — Portraits of Contemporary Norwegians by Nancy Bundt

In celebration of its 20th Anniversary, Norway House is proud to present a special encore showing of Nancy Bundt’s Perceptions of Norway exhibit on the walls of the K.A.H.R. Innovation + Culture Center. This hit show was last displayed in the Galleri at Norway House in 2018.

Perceptions of Norway seeks to expand common perceptions of Norwegians and their culture. Through the eyes of a fellow American, photographer Nancy Bundt — an expat residing in Norway for 25 years — guests to the exhibit will be able to witness the stories of a diverse group of Norwegians. These stories will allow guests to consider their own relationships with Norway while also discovering a renewed excitement for the culture by connecting their own stories with those of Norwegians today.

Paintings by Jana Peterson

Bright. Bold. Attention-grabbing.

We’re proud to welcome back Jana Peterson and her Nordic-themed paintings, on display in the Torgerson Vestibyle October 7 through 14.

Peterson describes herself as a “colorist.” “I want my paintings to knock your socks off,” she says. Clean lines and an architectural quality to her compositions underscore her use of color and create an upbeat energy.

Peterson, originally from Northfield, Minnesota, has spent a significant portion of her life in Arizona, surrounded by the colors of the southwest. When she was 21, she made her first visit to Norway and felt a deep connection to her heritage and to the dramatic landscape. The influence of both can be seen in her work.

Peterson’s paintings, which are available for purchase, can be viewed whenever Norway House is open. Her jewelry, also inspired by her Norwegian heritage, is available at ALSO Ingebretsen’s Gavebutikk at Norway House.

Peterson will also be teaching Wine and Painting classes. Due to popularity, three classes are available. Click on the date below to register.

Plein Air Painting by G. W. Anderson

Minneapolis-based artist G. W. Anderson paints with a love for the outdoors. Many of his landscapes are now on display at Norway House. Of his work, Anderson writes:

I don’t much like artist’s statements.

I do like painting from the shade on a hot summer ay or out of the wind in winter; listening, alone, to what nature only whispers.

In each painting some note of the landscape cried out to be painted. Hearing that call, I rushed to unload my kit, set up , an get to work.

After a few hours, I had a painting, often falling short of my expectation, but sometimes, containting a small gem that reflected that original calling.

Today, I share those whispers: caught on the wind, in the grass and trees, or raining from the sun, and I invite you to join the conversation.

More than 40 works are displayed in the Galleri at Norway House. There is no cover to view this collection, though donations are greatly appreciated in support of Norway House’s mission.

G. W. Anderson’s work is for sale, and if you’re lucky, you may even get to meet the artist. He’s at Norway House most mornings and all day on Thursdays. If you’d like to arrange a private showing, contact info@norwayhouse.org.
