Colonel H.C. Heg Civil War Remembrance Day (Free Day-long Event)

The “Scandinavian Regiment,” the 15th Wisconsin Infantry, led by Colonel H.C. Heg, distinguished themselves at Chickamauga.


Join Civil War experts and history lovers as we commemorate Colonel Hans Christian Heg and the soldiers of Minnesota and Wisconsin that served in the Civil War. Colonel Heg led the 15th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment, which distinguished itself at the Battle of Chickamauga, and where Heg was tragically killed.

Historians and history lovers will be on hand at Norway House to talk about various aspects of the Civil War and some artifacts will be on display. The Ramsey County Historical Society, the Twin Cities Civil War Roundtable, independent historians, and others will be available to talk to you about the many contributions of Minnesota and Wisconsin volunteers and about the soldiers’ experience.

The speakers throughout the day include:

  • Musical performance of Civil War tunes and popular Norwegian songs of the era by David and Jeanie Johnston (morning and afternoon performances)

  • Talk by David Johnston, discussing how the impact of the Civil War is felt in Minnesota today.

  • Talk by Stephen Osman, Senior Historian MNHS (retired) on Fort Snelling and the Soldiers’ Experience. told through the letters they wrote home.

  • Talk by Sandra Bestland on the role of women in the Civil War.

Throughout the day, there will be readings of translated letters from Norwegian immigrant soldiers.

Free samples of hardtack (though you are not obligated to try them)

This event is suitable for families, and will be most interesting to children in 6th grade and above.
